YOU WERE NEVER MEANT TO BE A YEAGERIST | BE MORE SHONEN: Attack On Titan Manga 134

ATTACK ON TITAN SPOILERS AHEAD

I am perpetually in a state of shock when it comes to some members of the Attack On Titan fandom and in many ways I think the story is wasted on a lot of the Shingeki No Kyojin lot. The aftermath of manga chapter 134 has had many members of the fanbase praise Eren's actions, celebrating his outright destructive viewpoints.

I wholeheartedly believe that they are falling into a logical trap and I think it's a valuable learning experience and point of discussion. This video has been made to try and illustrate what I think is the point of Eren's character arc right now and the author intent behind his actions by comparing it to real world examples, philosophies, theories, and current events.

You're not supposed to be a Yeagerist and Eren Yeager is no better than a facist dictator. His philosophies of freedom are turning in on themselves as he takes the freedom away from millions of people starting with his friends and including innocent babies. Let's try and understand each other better.

ADDENDUM: Since posting this video not only did I get ratio'd somewhat by the Yeagerists but I had a back and forth with many people on the video. Some conversations were very productive, some less so. Interestingly there seems to be a large section of the fanbase that doesn't actually understand that Attack On Titan is about politics, that really surprised me!

I've watched the video over and over to try and see what it was that people were getting so amped up about and to be honest I probably set it up that way by using the subject matter I did in my thumbnails. I think people felt inclined to debate my take on it based on not wanting to be associated with real world monsters. Maybe I chose to discuss this in too casual a setting and it should have been more scripted, and in sensitive topics like this in the future I'll probably tread a bit more carefully so that the overall message isn't lost.

Despite the comments and the dislikes I still believe that I understand the story of Attack on Titan and Eren's character, alongside what he's meant to represent with our current knowledge of the story and I stand by my analysis in the video.

To end this edit, I would like to post these side by sides one last time to re-iterate that I 100% believe that Eren Yeager and his supporters are on the wrong side of history and that you're not meant to support it

Parallels between attack on titan and anti-nazi propaganda art from world war 2If you didn't already think this comparison between Eren and World War 2 anti-nazi art was intentional the plane is also called 'freedom', sound familiar?

Parallels between attack on titan and anti-nazi propaganda art from world war 2'Shine through the sky, on your wings of freedom' - Lyrics from Attack On Titan's second OP by Linked Horizon take on new life in this context

Parallels between attack on titan and anti-nazi propaganda art from world war 2As if the marching titans wasn't already enough of a metaphor for the marching Nazi soldiers throughout World War 2, here we have a direct comparison between another piece of anti-nazi art and Attack on Titan panels.

I did say this in the video, but I don't think it's outside the realm of possibility that Eren is doing this for some kind of greater good and once we know what it is it might be able to put all the manga's events into a different context. It's hard for me to swallow that the same guy that's killing millions of innocents also made a speech this powerful and inspiring:

It's my hope that we one day see that Eren again before the manga is over in the next few chapters.

Long live the cringevengers
💪
