My First Deadlift Contest: Open Day At Pride Performance Warrington 2018
Throughout my young life I was never athletic. I was called fat, picked last, and my only use in sports was as a weight in tug of war. In a lot of ways I’m thankful because I have something to run away from, and when I finally got in shape I felt like I had successfully changed my self-image.
However, when I expressed interest in competing at strength sports there were plenty of people going behind my back saying ‘Minney only has a beach body, he’s not strong enough to be a powerlifter’. This day was my first chance to bury my former self and prove my doubters wrong.
I’ll tell you this for free, muscle moose bursting out of your nose during a particularly strenuous deadlift is not a pleasant feeling.
But there we are, I won the deadlift contest despite my doubters thinking that they knew better. Feeling underestimated can be such a powerful motivator and I encourage anyone who takes peoples opinions to heart to live by this mantra:
Prove them wrong
Until the next deadlift folks, stay Shonen
