Beating Junk Food Cravings: Advice For Weebs And Cosplayers
Is it really any surprise we have an obesity epidemic? High calorie convenient foods are everywhere and they’re also delicious. A common question I get asked is ‘Minney, how do you beat junk food cravings?'
Before we get into that you guys have to know that I’m NOT a perfect picture with this. You’ve seen my chicken nugget world records, my eating challenges, and my adoration for pizza. I’ve also gone on record to say, partially in jest, ‘I don’t want to live in a world without creme eggs’
Regardless of these short-comings I manage to stay lean year round with a few key strategies:
-Make healthy options easy to obtain. The convenience of junk makes it very easy to indulge
-Don’t keep junk food in the house. You’re much less likely to binge eat a tub of ice cream if you have to run to the store to get it
-Fill up on high protein high fibre foods and stay hydrated so you’re not hungry. That way you can wrestle with your cravings with the quite disarming logic of ‘yeah but I’m not hungry’
-See if you can bake a high protein lower calorie healthy option of the thing you’re craving. I’ve made protein ice-cream, cheesecake, pancakes, and pizza before. There’s likely an option online for anything you can dream up
-When all else fails track the calories of your junk and see if it’s an allowable expense in your daily allotment. If I mess up and have a bag of cookies I know that’s around 1,000 calories, so the rest of my day has to be meat and vegetables
Sometimes this will all go to shit, especially during social gatherings, LANs, and convention weekends. But if you stick to these principles the majority of the time those few unplanned indulgences shouldn’t matter.
