Why Saiyan's Should Eat A Super High Protein Diet

A high protein diet is amazing and its benefits are well understood. More muscle, less fat, less hungry, what’s not to like?

However, like Goku, what happens if we go even further beyond?

Common dietary advice is that there isn’t any benefit to consuming more than 0.8 grams of protein per lb of an individual’s bodyweight. However, the scientific literature actually shows that this only applies to those who are either at maintenance calories or in a calorie surplus.

For those who are dieting studies have shown that up to 1.4grams of protein per lb of bodyweight has benefits for muscle gain, recovery, and satiety meaning you will actually stick to your diet! I noticed this for myself quite early on in my training, somehow throughout my fat loss phases I’d actually gain more strength than I would in my gaining phases despite all the experts and guru’s telling me that wasn’t possible. I now know that the difference was the crazy high protein during my dieting phase.

And for that reason, after a while I just stopped going through bulking phases and always maintained my insanely high protein diet. So far so good, I haven’t hit a true wall yet with my strength and I’ve improved every year even after 8 years of training.

So what’s my simple protocol? I get 50% of my calories from protein with sources such as chicken, lean beef, zero fat yoghurt, protein powder, eggs, and cottage cheese. That’s around 250-300 grams of protein a day which for me is close to double what I’d be getting going the 0.8g per lb route.

There will be people out there who just cannot stick to this either because it’s expensive or because they just don’t have the appetite. For those people 0.8g of protein per lb of bodyweight is still an excellent start and will do just fine.

My current physique built by plenty of protein, a calorie deficit, and well programmed strength training. Cosplay: Son Goku (Dragon Ball Z)

But for me there’s nothing more Shonen than eating a kilo each of meat and Fruit/Vegetables a day and it’s got a great deal of scientific evidence to help with all things strength training and fat loss related.

Eat more protein, Be More Shonen
